dawa is medicine!
it's not really a cocktail to be rated for its taste. it is what its name means - medicine. on that note, it works amazingly <3

Wrong Spirit
Hi, Having just yesyterday returned from Mombasa I know for a fact that they use Rum and it tends to be there own Simba brand and not Vodka, of course ant white Rum could be used

To each his own
I’m born and bred in Mombasa and have sampled Dawas all over the place. Carnivore, Nairobi and Tamarind Restaurant, Mombasa make them the best!! With Regards to the alcohol to use, traditionally it has indeed been Vodka, but people over time have experimented with whisky and rum. Kenya Cane (local) especially. If you have too many with Kenya Cane, it WILL give you a headache trust me. In my experience, the best spirit is a mix of Smirnoff Vodka and Myer’s Rum (dark rum) with ¾ parts Honey and ¼ sugar rather than 100% honey or 100% sugar. Stir in the sugar first. Sugar dissolves faster in cold or tepid water than honey, raising its solute concentration at a quicker rate. This in turn draws out the lemon juice from the lemons faster than a Dawa with just honey. To give it an extra kick, stir in a single mint leaf!
